LOCAL authorities across the country are set to have millions cut from their budgets due to the shortfall in the number of people who have paid the controversial household charge.
As many as 50% of those eligible for the €100 charge – which was due by the end of March – have yet to pay. Now Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan is set to withhold funding from city and county councils as punishment with local services set to be impacted.
The reduction in funding is set to vary between local authorities but is expected to range between 5% and 15%.
Opposition TDs have since accused Minister Hogan of bully boy tactics as the debate rumbles on.
