Revenue to chase down household charge

The Revenue Commissioners are set to be given new powers to chase down the 600,000 homeowners who have yet to pay the household charge.

Among the measures they will potentially use to get people to pay will be to deny householders tax clearance certificates.

Penalties for failing to pay the new property tax will also be far more severe than the ones faced by those who fail to pay the household charge.

The government is still retaining hope that 75% of people will have paid the household charge by the end of the year, with the remaining quarter of homeowners being “chased down” by the Revenue.
