Output continues to fall in construction sector

The volume of output in the building and construction industry fell by 3.2% in the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter.

The Central Statistics Office said that on an annual basis, the volume of output in construction decreased by 8.2% in the second quarter of 2012.

The CSO said the quarterly fall reflects decreases of 7.2% and 6.9% in the volume of residential and non-residential building.

The volume of output in civil engineering increased by 6.7%.

In the year to June, the CSO said that output in the construction sector fell by 6.2% and 5.9% respectively in the 27 member European Union and the 17 member euro zone. The largest increases were seen in Estonia, with building output jumping 30% there, Latvia (23.5%) and Romania (9.7%).

The biggest falls in construction work were seen in Greece, with output there down 28.6%, Portugal (17.6%) and Slovenia (15.7%)
