No information will be revealed about the forthcoming property tax before December’s Budget, Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said.
The tax on households is set to be implemented in the Budget but despite speculation over how it would be introduced, Minister Hogan is remaining tight-lipped.
He did admit, however, that local authorities would have some financial responsibility in relation to the tax although he refused to say if they would have the power to set rates for the charge.
Minister Hogan was responding to criticism from Fianna Fáil’s Barry Cowen, who hit out at the Minister’s failure to make the Thornhill report on property tax available for debate since he received it in May.
Minister Hogan said the Cabinet had not yet discussed the property tax and the only decision implemented was that that Revenue Commissioners would collect it when it came into effect next summer.
