The Irish Mortgage Holders’ Organisation have approached estate agents body, the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV) seeking them to sign a public declaration that its members would boycott the sale of family homes which have been forcibly repossessed by banks.
The head of the IMHO, David Hall, told The Irish Times that he expects IPAV – which represents around 800 estate agents – to sign the declaration by the end of the week.
He said this would send a message out that banks would not be able to act unilaterally on home repossessions and profit from easy sales.
It follows on from a similar agreement between the IMHO and auction specialists Allsop Space at the weekend.
IPAV chief Paul Davitt said yesterday that most of its members were already unwilling to sell forcibly repossessed homes.
He told RTÉ Radio: “I can’t tell every member to refuse to sell certain properties but I would imagine they would refuse to sell family homes which have been repossessed.”
