JOBS Minister Richard Bruton has backed up his Cabinet colleague Phil Hogan’s claim that income tax hikes may be needed if people continue to refuse to pay the household charge.
Minister Bruton said that it was an “important factor” for the government not to increase income tax but said it may have to be done if the 600,000 people yet to pay the €100 household charge did not do so.
"I think what Phil Hogan was expressing was that if people refuse to pay a tax that is supporting local services in their area, they will see a natural consequence," he said.
"You have to treat the people who pay their taxes and have a right to see the delivery of service - Government has to champion those people.”
