Allsop Space auction cancelled due to aggressive protesting

The Allsop Space auction scheduled for the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin today has been cancelled due to aggressive protesting.

Auctioneer Gary Murphy was in the process of reading through the instructions for the auction when he was interrupted by several protestors, the most vocal of which surrounded the sale of a pub in Newtowncashel - which was due to be lot number 40 on the day.

After things eventually settled down, he announced that lot 1 – an apartment in Parnell Street in Dublin – had been withdrawn prior to auction so he moved on to lot two.

Before bidding could commence, however, protests flared up again with a large group chanting for the abandonment of the sale.

Within minutes potential bidders started to flee the auction room, forcing Mr Murphy to announce that he was taking “a break for a moment because obviously we can’t conduct the auction.”

After a delay of 45 minutes and with no sign of the protests ending, Allsop Space were forced to announce the cancellation of the auction.
