Fifty seven per cent of homeowners liable for the household charge have now paid, according to Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.
Speaking yesterday, the Carlow/Kilkenny TD said that those who had not paid would be getting reminders about their obligations throughout the summer months. Anyone then who still refused to pay would face court action, he said.
“Ultimately, people must decide if they want to comply with the law or not and if they do not comply with the law, they face litigation,” said the minister.
He admitted, however, that because no comprehensive property database was available, a bill could not be sent to people.
Minister Hogan also said he would not introduce exemptions for those who had not paid.
