The opening night of TGL - the new golf league created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – got underway this week and proved a TV ratings success despite neither man playing in the opening match.
Instead it fell to Ireland’s Shane Lowry to hit the first shot in TGL history as his Bay Golf Club side picked up the first win.
They played shots into a giant simulator screen before tackling a dynamic short-game zone with a rotating green that alters topography for each virtual hole, all within the custom-built SoFi Center arena in Florida in front of 1,500 spectators. The audience tuned in en masse, with an average of 919,000 viewers during the two-hour show and peaking at 1.1 million as the action commenced.
TGL continues this week when Tommy Fleetwood’s Los Angeles take on Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links side but whether you tune into the new format or not there’s no denying the growth in simulator golf with many popping up across Ireland in recent years, including the new Pitch Ireland venue in Dublin’s Dawson Street.
For a lucky few golf fans, simulators have also been installed in their homes.
One such example is in Cullenagh on Stoney Road, Dundrum, Dublin 14.
This refurbished Victorian home features an external games room with a full trackman setup, allowing you to practice or play some of the world’s leading courses whatever the weather.
While a unique feature of the home, Cullenagh has so much more going for it. Extending to 348sqm, this is a truly unique residence, the epitome of elegant and contemporary living, having been refurbished, extended and remodelled to exacting standards over the last decade.
Built circa 1870 and occupying a prime position on a third of an acre at the end of Stoney Road, Cullenagh is a majestic home in a secure setting surrounded by landscaped gardens.
The hidden charm to this exceptional home is the juxtaposition of the mature Victorian exterior and the modern and luxurious interior. The façade finish and entrance steps are of granite, the 11 ft ceiling heights in reception rooms, ornate fireplaces throughout, picture rails, ceiling roses and sash windows have all painstakingly upgraded and maintained providing for a stunning Victorian home with a contemporary 21st Century feel, a home of great style and character with cutting edge technology.
The architecture is breathtaking with a stunning reception hall, formal drawing room, living room and dining room on the ground floor.
Steps then lead down to a wonderful open plan kitchen/dining room with wall to wall windows and French doors out to the sheltered rear gardens. A cosy family room, utility and guest WC can be found also on this level.
At return and first floor level, there are an impressive 5 well-proportioned bedrooms, four being ensuite. There is also a wonderful family bathroom on this level.
A staircase leads to the attic room which makes for a lovely study room brightly lit by Velux windows.
The gardens surrounding Cullenagh are exquisite. The front driveway, which is cobble locked and overlooked by the most magnificent monkey puzzle tree, provides secure parking behind electric gates for four cars. Access leads to the side gardens and a hedge archway which in turn lead to a purpose-built garden room which currently houses the ultimate games room golf simulator with the potential to retain or use as a gym or home office.
A range of original stone build sheds, outside WC and storage rooms separates the side gardens from the rear garden. The rear garden has a large Indian Stone patio area and an array of beautifully planted beds and mature trees offering complete privacy.
The location is also superb. Dundrum village is just a gentle stroll away and is within easy reach of the much sought-after local junior, senior schools and universities, Dundrum town centre, local shops, restaurants and local parks.
Stoney Road is recognised as one of the most sought after and prestigious roads in Dundrum, minutes' walk from Airfield, the 38 acre working farm and gardens, within minutes' stroll of 2 Luas stops and Dundrum town centre and only 20 minutes from St Stephens Green.
