It’s one of the biggest weekends of the golfing year with The Open Championship underway at Royal Portrush.
While this is just the third time that The Open has come to Irish shores, golf remains one of the most popular sports in the country.
Ireland is home to more than 400 golf courses and, since 2008, it has the highest density of golf courses in Europe and a third of the world’s natural links courses. According to Golf Ireland, about 800,000 people engaged in some form of golf activity last year, with 500,000 adults having played on an 18-hole course at least once in 2024. It also found that 20% of the non-golfing population were interested in participating in the sport.
While most of us have to head for the course or the range to hone our skills, some people have still been sharpening up on their game having gone the extra mile and installed putting greens, bunkers and even indoor simulators at their homes.
