Being able to afford a house is one thing but ensuring you buy what’s right for you is quite another.
Often completing the purchase of a house is only the beginning of the costs.
You might have fallen in love with that stunning 5 bed show house but do you really need five bedrooms now or even into the future? You might have a large family or be planning one but if not then you’re essentially paying to decorate rooms which will be lying empty more often than not.
There’s also the additional cost of heating those rooms, maintaining the property over time not to mention you’ll also likely be paying a higher rate of Local Property Tax as a result of having a bigger and therefore more valuable home.
We all love a little extra space but if you over-do it in terms of what you buy then it can cost you thousands in the long run as the up-front cost of the property is likely to be much more, leading to a higher asking price and bigger mortgage repayments each month.
Instead try to work out what you need. Buying a house is important but you need to be able to live too so try not to overstretch yourself.
