What are ‘Digs’?

Lodgings
Digs is the nickname / slang for lodgings and lodgings are a type of accommodation whereby you live with a family. Many students in their first year of college choose this type of accommodation as it comes with many benefits such as:
  • All bills are included in the price
  • You get your grub served up to you i.e. you get breakfast, dinner and supper - no need ... to cook or lift a finger
  • Most of all it is like a home away from home

Self catering lodgings also exist. This is where you live with a family but have more freedom. With self catering lodgings you would have use of the kitchen to cook meals etc.

Lodgings are a great way to start off living the college life but it has its disadvantages such as; lack of freedom, time constraints and curfews. Lodgings can also come with a long list of rules including no visitors.

'Digs' can cost anywhere between €70 - €110 per week. The price will depend on the type of room and what is included in the price i.e. ensuite, cooked meals etc.

To find out about lodgings close to the college you hope to attend you should contact the college Accommodation Office. They usually have an up to date register of lodgings within walking distance of the college.
