Socialist Party hits out at property tax

The Socialist Party has hit out at the forthcoming property tax, branding it a “poverty tax” and describing its introduction as a “new low for Labour and Fine Gael.”

In a statement on their website, the Socialist Party described the new tax, which  is set to be introduced in July, as a  “straightforward robbery of working class people, as well as a huge attack on people’s civil liberties.”

They warned that the average amount paid towards the property tax could triple to meet IMF targets and argued that families have already taken enough cuts – pointing to the fact that a recent Irish League of Credit Union survey found that 1.4 million people have €50 or less to spend after essential bills are paid each month.
