Safe as houses - looking after your mobility scooter

When it comes to looking after your home, you do everything you possibly can to keep it in good condition. You clean it from top to bottom, you vacuum the floors, weed the garden and redecorate when you can.

In order to protect your home from the unexpected (such as your roof caving in) you pay for buildings insurance. In order to protect your goods from being lost, stolen or damaged you pay for contents insurance.

It’s quite clear your home is an expensive thing to keep running!

Just like your home, mobility scooters need just as much love and attention. You need to keep it in good condition, well maintained and serviced. You also need to protect it with a good mobility scooter insurance policy.

With that in mind here’s a handy guide on how you can look after your mobility scooter.

#1 – Make regular checks

Just like your home, you need to make regular checks of your mobility scooter to make sure it’s in good running home. Before you next set out, check the tyres are inflated, the mirrors are in the right position and kept clean, the lights work and the battery is fully charged. Another good check is that the horn works – after all you don’t want to be in an accident and be accused of being careless!

#2 – Keep it clean

Keeping your mobility scooter as clean as possible has more than just style appeal. It’s important to keep it clean because you will be able to spot any damage as soon as it happens, and you’ll also be seen easily. A grubby mobility scooter also looks shabby, and should you ever want to sell it you’ll not get a good price.

#3 – Keep the battery in good nick

No vehicle performs well on a rubbish battery. In order to get the best performance from your mobility scooter, the battery needs to be fully charged before any long ride. Try and adopt good battery habits – never run them completely flat, never switch off the charger before the charge is fully complete and always, always unplug the charger from the scooter once it’s done.

#4 – Keep your documents in a safe place

You need to keep all your documents relating to your mobility scooter and its insurance in a safe place. Should something go wrong you will want to know quickly how to fix it. If you break down you want to get to the warranty. If you need to make a claim on your insurance policy, you need to know all the details!

#5 – Keep it secure

The last thing you want to happen to your mobility scooter is to have it nicked – either when you’re on your travels or from your home. As such, think about buying a mobility scooter alarm, never leave valuables in the basket and contact your local police force to give it a mark which can be easily identified. Finally, when your scooter is at home, keep it safely locked away at night. If that’s in a shed or garage make sure it has a secure lock.

So there you have it, a few top tips for how you can keep your mobility scooter in good condition and well protected should the unthinkable happen.
