Report on pyrite homes due this afternoon

A Government-commissioned report on the scale of the pyrite problem in houses around the country is due to be published this afternoon.

The report is expected to reveal that more than 12,000 homes have been affected by the substance and it will cost an average of €40,000 to €50,000 to repair them.

Pyrite is a naturally occurring material which has been found in the infill used under houses built during the boom.

It expands when exposed to air and moisture and has caused floorboards to buckle and walls to crack.
