Over one million have now paid the household charge

The number of people who have registered for the household charge has now passed the one million mark.

However, it is estimated that somewhere between 600,000 and 800,000 homes have still to register for the controversial €100 payment, which will be replaced next year by a full-blown property tax.

Reminder notices are still being sent out by local authorities around the country but according to figures, up to date as of last Friday, 1,014,585 properties are now registered.
