Over 1.1 million have now paid household charge

Just over 1.1 million people had paid the household charge before the end of 2012, new figures from the Department of the Environment have revealed.

The figures show that to date 1.126m properties have been registered, including 22,334 waivers.

In total €113.35m has been collected and reallocated to local authorities through the Local Government Fund.

Around 30% have still to pay the charge, which will be replaced by the new Local Property Tax in the summer.

Those who have not paid the charge will owe €130 if they pay by April 30th but this will increase to €200 when the new property tax comes into force on July 1st.
