One in three worried about becoming homeless

New figures show that one in three Irish people are worried about becoming homeless because of problems fulfilling payments or mortgages.

Concern amongst the public about the growing number of people becoming homeless stands at almost 40%.

That figures is double what it was two years ago.

The research is being published by the Simon Community to mark the launch of Simon Week 2012.

The homeless charity is asking everyone to ‘Take a Step for Simon to help tackle homelessness’.

The Simon Communities provide accommodation and support for people experiencing homelessness and those at risk.

It delivers support and service to between 4,500 and 5,000 individuals and families who experience – or are at risk of – homelessness on an annual basis.

It is an affiliation of local Communities in Cork, Dublin, Dundalk, Galway, the Midlands, the Mid West, the North West and the South East.

Recent Census figures showed that almost 4,000 people slept rough or at accommodation for homeless people on Census night last year.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show that on April 10th 2011 3,808 people were accounted for this way.

2,539 were male and 1,269 were female and of those 12% were also classed as children.

There were 457 children aged 14 and under in the homeless count.
