A majority of Irish people are in favour of Taoiseach Enda Kenny meeting US President Donald Trump today, according to a new survey by MyHome.ie
According to the survey over 53% believe the Taoiseach should meet President Trump, while 47% believe he shouldn’t.
The survey also reveals mixed views on whether ministers should go abroad or not for our national holiday. Forty five per cent believe they should while 32% believe they should stay at home. A further 23% are undecided. Over a thousand people took part in the online survey to mark the Patrick’s Day Festival.
Angela Keegan, Managing Director of MyHome.ie said the survey indicated people’s approach to the day may be moving away from previous stereotypes.
“Eight out of ten people said Patrick’s Day at home was better than abroad and the vast majority (89%) said they would be celebrating the day at home. Six per cent said they would be holidaying in Ireland while 5% would be abroad. Only half of respondents said they would have a drink on the day while over a quarter, 27% said they wouldn’t. A further 23% were undecided.“
On the political front, the survey found that Leo Varadkar on 35% is the most popular choice to succeed Enda Kenny as Taoiseach, with Simon Coveney on 15% and Frances Fitzgerald on 4%. Outside of Fine Gael, Micheal Martin is the main frontrunner on 12% with Gerry Adams on 7%. However in what may be construed as a warning shot to the main candidates, A.N. Other attracted over a quarter of the vote on 26%.
As controversial lottery website Lottoland goes up against the National Lottery here in Ireland the survey found a good deal of negativity to recent changes to the National Lottery. While 24% of respondents thought the Lotto offered value for money, 55% said it didn’t while 21% said they didn’t know.
When asked if they played more or less since the Lotto changed ownership and increased the number of numbers to 45, 3% said more, 46% said less and 51% said the same.
Over a third of those surveyed said they would have a bet on Cheltenham.
