Euromillions winner Dolores McNamara is understood to have bought a multi-million euro mansion on the shores of Lough Derg after an international bidding frenzy.
The Limerick woman, who won a then record €115m jackpot in 2005, was one of the key bidders for the €3.5m Victorian Tinarana House, which has 2.3km of lake short frontage and over 220 acres of land.
The identity of the new owner has not been confirmed, but sources told the Limerick Leader newspaper that the property was highly sought after by Dolores due to its “private and tranquil setting”.
The property, which has 16 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, was put on the market on the instructions of the receiver, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, and was sold by Dublin based agents Frank Knight and local agents GVM.
Tom Crosse of GVM said he was“delighted” with the sale, after it fetched nearly twice the asking price. Described as a “beautiful” property, it was put on the market in the past five months, with the deal concluded shortly after the New Year.
It is speculated that the Limerick mother of six was the successful bidder, with a local firm of solicitors beating off competition from prospective owners in Austria, Holland, Germany and Britain.
Dolores is listed as being the 78th richest person in Ireland. The interest she has accumulated on her €115m 2005 Euromillions win, as a result of a €2 quickpick, has been in the region of €12m.
She already owns nearby Lough Derg Hall, which was bought for €1.7m in 2005.
Tinarana House was formerly owned by Dr Pascal Carmody, who sold it in 2006 to a development consortium.
During the boom it was bought for €14m by a consortium of Limerick businessmen who had plans to turn it into a major tourism, sports and leisure resort.
