Thousands of households will start to receive letters from the Department of Social Protection from today inviting them to apply for the water conservation grant.
The Department of Social Protection will write to householders inviting them to apply for the water conservation grant.
With 1.3 million people registrations made with Irish Water, it is expected 10,000 letters will be sent over the coming week, with thousands more following that.
Householders need to apply for the grant by 8 October giving their PPS numbers and bank details online, and in some cases by telephone.
The Department of Social Protection expects all payments of the €100 grant to be made by the end of October.
From next year a new database will be used for the administration of the water conservation grant.
In a letter, obtained by RTÉ under the Freedom of Information Act, the Department of the Environment details how the Local Government Management Agency could bring together data on customers and non-customers of Irish Water into a single new database to be used by the Department of Social Protection.
This will involve the setting up of a new website to collect and register the details of non-Irish Water Customers.
