Less than one in seven have registered their septic tanks to date

Fewer than one in seven eligible Irish households have registered for the septic tank charge, just a week before the registration fee increases from €5 to €50.

New figures show that just 58,700 homes have registered for the mandatory inspection of their septic tanks to date.

This is despite the recent Census showing that there are 437,652 residential septic tanks in the State. That means just 13.4% have registered to date.

The current promotional rate ends on Friday with people having until next February to register.
