Less than 400 new homes started to be built in first six months of year

Less than 400 new homes have been registered to start construction in the first six months of 2012, new figures have revealed.

The new data shows that just 393 new homes have started to be built in Ireland this year with just 3,929 completed – the lowest number since records began in 1975.

In four counties – Cavan, Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford – no construction was registered at all.

Today’s Irish Times reports that 2012 is set to eclipse last year, which was the worst year on record for housebuilding in Ireland.
