Landlords and second home owners to be targeted for household charge

Minister of State for Trade and Development Joe Costello has said that the government will be looking at registers of landlords and second home owners as part of efforts to get everyone signed up to the household charge.

Just over 800,000 signed up for the charge before last Saturday's deadline - believed to be less than half of the figure of those liable.

Minister Costello today said that part of the problem with the introduction of the charge was the lack of a database but he said some existing lists will now be cross-referenced to see who is signed up.

"What the Government are going to be doing is… targeting people who are targetable with the database that is there," he said.

"There are over 300,000 people who have paid the Non-Principal Property Registration Tax, and there is about 90,000 landlords.

"They are the people that the Government will be looking at now to see whether or not those people have paid."
