Kildare home featured in Wall Street Journal

A LUXURY home in County Kildare has gained international recognition after being chosen as the Wall Street Journal’s European House of the Day.

Hill Cottage in Straffan is on the market with Colliers International for €1.7 million but could well attract a US bidder now that it has been advertised in the internationally renowned newspaper. The cost of the home in dollars is quoted at $2.8 million.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the six bed country house was built by the Geraghty brothers, Michael and Joseph, as a dream home for their parents.

"I took on the project management, although I'm a civil engineer to trade, because we couldn't find a builder who was able to take on the job in terms of the quality of finish we required," said Michael Geraghty.

"Everything was co-designed with my brother Joseph, who is an architect in Toronto," he said.

"Some of the finishes we couldn't find in Ireland, so we imported all the recessed wood paneling, other specialist skirting, architraves, backband and coving from Canada."

It took four years to build the impressive home. Although Hill Cottage has been built from scratch, it takes its name from the servants' quarters that used to stand on the site. The property includes about an acre of land overlooking a 240-acre stud farm. It is is located near Straffan village, which sits on the banks of the River Liffey about 18 miles from Dublin and is in close proximity to the K Club.
