Just 4% of homeowners around the country have paid the controversial new household charge to date, new figures from the Department of the Environment have revealed.
The figures, up to date as of Friday January 27th, showed that 63,011 households have registered for the €100 charge to date – bringing in a total of just over €6.3 million for the economy.
However, that figure is some way short of the 1.6 million households nationwide that are expected to pay the charge, which has been the subject of serious criticism from opposition TDs and a number of celebrity figures, including soccer pundit and journalist Eamon Dunphy.
A rally against the charge takes place in Limerick tonight while similar events have already taken place around the country with several others planned for the coming weeks.
Homeowners have until March 31st to register for the charge at www.householdcharge.ie
The government is expected to up its campaign to encourage people to register for the charge in the coming weeks with leaflet drops being made to every household in the country.
