Irish Water has said it has destroyed all paper records of PPS numbers.
The utility initially asked for a person's PPS when they registered for water charges but the company was ordered to get rid of them after the government decided people no longer needed to submit them for billing purposes.
It comes as the first bills arrive on doormats around the country today and hundreds of staff prepare to face customer queries on the Irish Water helpline.
