Increase reported in number of people holiday at home in Ireland

More Irish people holidayed at home last year, resulting in half a million extra nights' accommodation being booked at hotels, B&Bs and guest houses.

The CSO household travel statistics for 2013 show Irish residents took 7.1 million domestic trips including holidays, business and other journeys within Ireland.

That resulted in 20.6 million "bed nights" being booked, up from 20.1 million last year.

The number of trips is up marginally on the 7.03 million in 2012 but below 2011 and 2012 figures.

Spending by Irish visitors while on trips within Ireland is little changed. The average spend per trip in 2013 was €193.38 compared to €191.30 in 2012.

Outbound travel figures show 6.6 million overseas trips were taken by Irish residents last year, the same figure as in the previous year.
