Fewer houses were built last year than any other time over the past four decades, new statistics have revealed.
The collapse in the housing sector is confirmed with Department of the Environment stats showing that just 10,480 homes were completed last year.
This represents a 28% drop on the 14,602 homes completed in 2010 and is a fraction of the 93,419 homes that were built in 2006 at the height of the building boom.
Department statistics going back each year to 1970 show that the nearest total to last year was 1970, when 13,887 homes were completed.
