Homeowners have been warned about a scam in which bogus household charge collectors have been calling to homes around the country to collect the €100 fee.
County councils nationwide have told the public to be on alert after conmen were reported to be going door-to-door to try and get money off householders.
A spokesperson for Meath County Council confirmed that two men had attempted to collect the tax from two homes in the Royal County this week.
It was pointed out that, despite newspaper speculation that council staff may be asked to collect the household charge, there was no staff collecting money on the council’s behalf at present. Homeowners were warned not to hand over the €100 charge to people calling to their door under any circumstances.
As well as the incident in Meath, fraudsters were also spotted calling to homes in Laois this week in the Mountmellick and Stradbally areas.
