European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton has said today that the Government will introduce a fair property tax system.
A report by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) stated that a tax averaging between €400-€1,000 a year could be implemented, with vastly reduced rates for those on low incomes.
The Coalition intends introducing the tax next year to replace the current €100 household charge.
Minister Creighton said that she wants to see a fair system introduced.
"I think everybody is unhappy and uncomfortable with the fact that we have a flat charge this year," she said.
"We want to introduce a much fairer system and the ESRI's report is one report, but as I say, the Minister's expert group will report with a range of options and then it will be for the Government to decide which is the fairest and least punitive option for the Irish public."
