This time round our electricity bill is set to get slapped with an extra €40 a year due to a Government proposal to pay for green energy incentives and support of peat-fired power plants.
As it said in the papers every year the Commission for Energy Regulation imposes a public service charge on all electricity users to pay for incentives for renewable energy and to support peat-fired power plants. Happily enough the charge was dropped last October for 12 months, but the regulator estimates that the incentives now cost €195 million a year, and therefore, to our delight to cover this cost our wallets get to feel yet another pinch in the form of an addition of €3.40 a month or €40 a year to our lecky bill.
However, we should be so lucky that its is only €3.40 a month as Energy consultants, McKinnon Clarke have warned that large industrial users, including many of the State’s biggest employers will be hard hit if the new charges were introduced as they could face five-figure increases in their annual electricity bills. McKinnon Clarke’s figures show the loss of credits combined with the extra charge would mean a typical industrial user paying about €3,000 extra a month, or well over €30,000 extra a year.
