Date for introduction of water charges could be decided this week

The exact date on when water charges will be introduced could be decided this week, according to Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.

Speaking in Cork on Friday, the Minister said that the decision as to when the charges would be implemented would be set by Finance Minister Michael Noon and Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore recently announced that the charges would not be introduced next January, as had been expected.

Minister Hogan said of when the charges will be introduced: “"In the troika programme at the moment, it is January 2014 but the precise time of it will be a matter for those discussions which are happening next week."
