Consumers' Association hits out at proposed TV licence fee increase

A consumer watchdog have hit out at RTÉ over their bid to raise the TV licence fee by €15.

The State broadcaster has proposed to raise the charge from €160 to €175 a year, with the 9.3% increase earmarked for the production of new programmes.

However, the Consumers’ Association of Ireland’s Michael Kilcoyne said there was “no justification” for the increase, adding: “Everybody is having to tighten their belts so why shouldn’t RTÉ?
