Call to reduce property tax for those in negative equity

An Independent TD is calling on the Government to reduce the local property tax for those in negative equity.

That is one of a number of measures included in a pre-Budget submission by Stephen Donnelly which also recommends increasing the number of teachers by 10% and increasing the amount of grants to third-level students by 30%.

Cabinet ministers are meeting today to finalise a raft of cuts totaling €2.5bn which are to be announced on Tuesday.

Deputy Donnelly is also calling for a reduction in the amount of tax relief that people can claim.

He said: "So, there are figures out that show the wealthiest people in the country actually pay significantly less tax.

"Why? Because they can avail of all these tiny little things and you can really only do them if a) you have the money to invest and b) you can afford an expensive tax consultant to find them for you.

"So what I am saying is, of the total amount of these that have been identified, let's just cut it down by 5%."
