AskDave.ie carry out extension to period home in South County Dublin

Welcome to our February "Building Blog". We will be updating this according as we come across items of interest in our ongoing Residential and Commercial projects.

This is a very interesting job we are on at the moment in Dublin. It is a period residence which we successfully tendered for. As is normal with these projects there is great emphasis on maintaining the integrity of the original house. The leaded glass panels in the picture will be kept and reused in the new window. The replacement windows will be Traditional Sash type made by our Joiners.

There is a substantial extension being added to the property and this will have some unusual aspects to it such as the  Aluclad window type. These are timber frames with an aluminium cladding to the exterior which is great for giving the warmth and traditional feel of timber windows but with the added benefit of a maintenance free exterior. This system also allows for substantial glazed areas which is great for opening up the house to natural light. We will show these window units as we proceed with the job.

We are also using a Fibreglass roof to the extension. We have done most types of roof before such as lead, zinc, copper, rubber and the traditional slate and tile finish but this is a first for us to do Fibreglass.  We are looking forward to seeing what way that works out and what problems, if any, arise with it!

We have undertaken to complete this project in 16 weeks so there is a lot to be done in that short time. Everyone will need to perform as efficiently as possible while maintaining the highest standards to the finished product.

As you can see from the picture attached we have completed the initial strip-out to the house and have poured the foundations for the new extension.

So far the weather has stayed fairly good for us and although it is pretty cold the rain, our big enemy, has stayed away. The main thing is to get the walls up now so that we can put the "lid" on as quickly as possible and get everybody working away on the inside.
