New figures have revealed that over 9,000 households per hour would have to sign up for the charge in order for the government to reach their target of 1.6 million households by Saturday.
Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton admitted at the weekend that the deadline was “ambitious” and also expressed her views that an easier method of payment should have been made, for example, via the post office.
The government has insisted, however, that there will be no extension to the payment deadline of this Saturday.

Meanwhile, opposition to the household charge is growing with a series of demonstrations against its introduction being held around the country last weekend.
