See how Sarah’s family bungalow in Ballina, Co. Mayo was transformed through a deep retrofit, improving energy efficiency from BER F to A2 with expert support and SEAI grants.

Sarah’s Sustainable Bungalow Transformation in Ballina, Co. Mayo

Breathing New Life into a Family Home

Despite its emotional significance, the property had become increasingly uninhabitable over the years. With a Building Energy Rating (BER) of F, it suffered from persistent cold, draughts, dampness, and even mould. Consequently, heating the home was not only inefficient but also costly. However, determined to create a warm, peaceful, and environmentally-friendly space, Sarah set out on a journey to retrofit the bungalow into a modern, sustainable home.

Her project was featured on RTÉ’s My Bungalow Bliss, and with the guidance of Electric Ireland Superhomes, Sarah and her retrofit team were able to dramatically improve the energy performance of the home.

Retrofit Measures Implemented

The deep retrofit included the following energy upgrades:

  • Attic insulation

  • Floor insulation

  • Air source heat pump installation

  • Replacement of windows

  • Airtightness improvements

Each measure contributed to reducing heat loss and improving overall energy efficiency, paving the way for a high-performance home with significantly lower carbon emissions.

Grant Support and Quality Oversight

Electric Ireland Superhomes also played a pivotal role in managing the SEAI One Stop Shop grant process, ensuring a seamless experience for Sarah. Their team oversaw quality assurance inspections throughout the project, guaranteeing that all work met the criteria required for grant approval. In total, the home qualified for €27,400 in SEAI grant funding.

A Remarkable Transformation

Sarah’s upgraded home now boasts a BER rating of A2, a far cry from the cold, inefficient building it once was. In addition, the retrofit improved comfort and air quality. It also lowered energy bills and reduced the home’s environmental impact.

This successful renovation highlights the power of deep retrofitting—not just in energy savings, but in improving quality of life while preserving cherished family homes for future generations.
