Amongst a number of changes that came into force on New Year’s Day as part of Budget 2025 included savings on installing a heat pump in your home.
As of January 1st, the VAT charged for installing a heat pump in a property will be reduced from the standard rate at 23% to the 9% reduced rate.
This means there has rarely been a better time to make the change if you’re considering it.
Installing a heat pump offers several benefits, both in terms of energy efficiency and overall comfort. Here MyHome outlines some key of the advantages:
- Energy Efficiency
- Dual Functionality: A heat pump provides both heating and cooling in one system. This means you can use it year-round, reducing the need for separate HVAC systems, which saves space and money.
- Lower Operating Costs: Heat pumps are generally more energy-efficient than conventional heating systems like electric resistance heaters, furnaces, or boilers. This can lead to significant cost savings on utility bills, especially in mild to moderate climates.
- Environmental Benefits
- Reduced Carbon Footprint: Heat pumps are environmentally friendly because they use electricity to move heat rather than generating it by burning fossil fuels. This leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions when powered by clean energy sources.
- Energy Source Flexibility: As grid electricity increasingly comes from renewable sources (e.g., solar, wind), the environmental benefit of using a heat pump increases.
- Comfort and Consistency
- Even Heating and Cooling: Heat pumps provide consistent and even temperature distribution across the home. Unlike traditional furnaces, which tend to create hot spots, heat pumps maintain more uniform temperatures.
- Dehumidification: Heat pumps not only heat and cool but also help dehumidify the air, which can improve comfort levels in both summer and winter.
- Longer Lifespan
- Durability: Heat pumps have a longer lifespan compared to conventional furnaces or air conditioners. A well-maintained heat pump can last 15-20 years or longer, while traditional HVAC systems typically last 10-15 years.
- Low Maintenance: Heat pumps generally require less maintenance compared to traditional heating systems. They don’t have burners or combustion systems, which can be prone to wear and tear.
- Quiet Operation
- Low Noise Levels: Heat pumps operate more quietly than traditional HVAC systems because they don’t rely on noisy combustion or air ducts to function. This can lead to a more peaceful indoor environment.
- Incentives and Rebates
- Government Incentives: With the VAT now reduced on installation from 23% to 9%, this can offset installation costs and make the transition more affordable.
- Space-Saving
- Compact Design: Because a heat pump combines both heating and cooling functions, you eliminate the need for multiple systems, saving space in your home. This is particularly beneficial for smaller properties or homes with limited space for traditional HVAC equipment.
- Better for Zones with Mild Winters
- Ideal for Moderate Climates: Heat pumps are particularly effective in regions with mild winters and hot summers. In colder climates, you may need a backup heating source, but in moderate areas, a heat pump can provide efficient heating even in low temperatures.
- Improved Air Quality
- Filtration Capabilities: Many heat pumps come with advanced filtration systems, which can help remove dust, allergens, and other particulates from the air. This can improve indoor air quality and benefit those with allergies or respiratory conditions.
- Smart Technology Integration
- Smart Thermostats: Many modern heat pumps are compatible with smart thermostats and home automation systems. This allows you to control the temperature remotely, schedule settings and optimize efficiency with minimal effort.
Key Considerations
- Upfront Cost: Heat pumps typically have a higher initial installation cost compared to traditional heating systems but this is often offset by lower operating costs over time.
Overall, heat pumps offer a highly efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for heating and cooling your home.
