Solar panel installation in Ireland: How Greenify can bridge the gap

After a sunny Irish summer, now is the ideal time to plan your solar panel installation and be prepared for next year. Here's what's involved, what grants are available, and how a Greenify loan can cover the rest.

If you're thinking about solar panel installation in Ireland, it’s time to start planning. Getting your quotes and grant application sorted now means a smoother installation before the year is out. For a complete walk through of the process, check out our Greenify Guide.

What Is Greenify?

Greenify is a is a nationwide credit union initiative helping members take meaningful climate action. Offering two loan options, a Home Energy Upgrade Loan and Transport Loan, Greenify is helping members make their homes and transport more sustainable. Greenify connects homeowners with straightforward, trusted lending for their sustainability goals.

Beyond solar, Greenify loans cover a broad range of upgrades, including attic and wall insulation, heat pump installation, boiler replacement, and electric vehicles. Loans are unsecured, available up to €100,000 over 10 years, and open to both existing credit union members and non-members. All participating credit unions are regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Greenify offers loans of up to €100,000 from your local credit union

Why Plan Now

Solar PV systems generate the most electricity during long daylight hours, making now a great time to assess your roof and get quotes from SEAI registered installers. Planning ahead also means:

  • Shorter lead times: early applications avoid the autumn/winter installer backlog.
  • Grid connection timing: installers must apply to ESB Networks first. This is typically a four-week process.
  • Full summer generation: systems installed by late summer capture more of the year's strongest sunlight.

The Benefits of Going Solar

Beyond the environmental upside, solar panel installation in Ireland offers a genuine financial case:

  • Lower electricity bills, as your home draws less power from the grid.
  • Income from unused electricity, through the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG).
  • Improved BER rating, supporting your home's resale value.
  • Reduced exposure to rising energy prices.

Grants Available for Solar Panel Installation

The SEAI Solar Electricity Grant is the main support for Irish homeowners. For 2026, the maximum remains €1,800, and solar installations also benefit from 0% VAT (in place since May 2023).

The grant is paid on a sliding scale: €700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp, then €200 per kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800. A typical 4kWp system qualifies for the full amount, but most households still face a shortfall to fund installation. That's where Greenify comes in.

To qualify, your home generally needs to have been built and occupied before 2021, with no prior solar PV grant under the same MPRN. You'll need an SEAI-registered installer and an approved Letter of Offer before work begins. Both homeowners and landlords can apply, though the application must come from the property owner.

How Greenify Bridges the Funding Gap

Even with the SEAI grant and 0% VAT, most solar PV installations leave a shortfall between the grant and total project cost. A Greenify Green Home Energy Upgrade Loan, offered through your local credit union, is built to close that gap, so you don't have to delay your installation while you save the balance yourself. Apply for your SEAI grant as normal, then borrow the difference through Greenify. Grants are not a requirement to avail of a Greenify loan.

Practical Steps to Get Started

  1. Check your eligibility for the SEAI Solar Electricity Grant.
  2. Get quotes from at least two SEAI-registered installers.
  3. Apply for your grant and wait for your Letter of Offer before work begins.
  4. Cover the shortfall with Greenify: talk to your local credit union about a loan.
  5. Schedule installation, ideally before the days shorten in autumn.
