More than 46,000 households in Ireland have availed of the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme since 2020.
The Help to Buy Scheme helps first-time buyers to buy a new house or apartment that costs €500,000 or less by offering a one-time tax refund of up to €30,000. This also applies to self-build homes, which are houses built by the owner on their own land to live in.
Figures from the Department of Finance show a total of 46,112 claims were approved which benefitted 83,644 people between July 2020 and April 2026.
Of the claims 35,642 related to purchases while the remaining 10,470 related to self-builds.
Since its introduction, the scheme has been met with significant uptake, reflecting the ongoing demand for affordable housing solutions in Ireland. By alleviating some of the financial burdens associated with buying a home, the initiative plays a key role in the government’s broader strategy to address housing affordability.
Tánaiste Simon Harris said: "We are determined to pull every lever to build more homes and deliver more homeownership.
"One such support is Help-to-Buy and really positive figures given to me show the impact this support is having all across the country,” he said.
