Households in Ireland are paying the third most expensive electricity bills in Europe.
That’s according to new figures from Eurostat which show that only Germany and Denmark residents are paying more on energy bills than the Irish. Prices are also much higher in Ireland than in non-EU countries such as Norway and Iceland.
The latest figures from the EU statistical agency means that electricity costs are €350 a year more expensive here on average than the rest of the EU.
The Eurostat study shows that electricity prices in Ireland are now 30% above the European average while gas prices here are the fifth highest in Europe.
While households here have benefitted from energy credits in recent years, the Government has said these will not be included in their next Budget later this year.
Estimated annual bills in Ireland remain 61% higher for electricity and 90% higher for gas than they were before the steep rise in energy prices that began in December 2020.
The estimated annual electricity cost for homeowners here is currently €1,556.
