If the walls of the Columban Hall in Galway City could talk, they could tell some stories.
This former Congregational church was built in 1863 but is set to be sold at auction on Thursday May 8th at Wilson’s Auctions in Dublin 22.
If ever there was a building calling out for a renovation project, it is surely this.
The hall has so much going from it, most notably its location on the Sea Road, just 1.6km from Galway city centre, 1km from Salthill and 1.5km from Taylor’s Hill.
Sea Road in Galway City is a well-known street that runs parallel to the coastline, offering beautiful views of Galway Bay. It is in the Salthill area, which is a popular seaside suburb of Galway City and is lined with a mix of green parks, residential homes, shops, restaurants, schools, commercial businesses, and accommodations, making it a vibrant part of the city.
It is also close to attractions like the Salthill Promenade, Blackrock diving tower, and numerous beaches, with the city centre within walking distance.
Columban Hall itself is a freestanding gable-fronted former Congregational church comprising of a four-bay single-storey nave, with a single-bay chancel to the north-west, a single-bay former vestry at the north corner with recent extension and a gabled porch to the front.
Flanked by terraces of houses, this High-Victorian former Congregational church is a striking landmark in the streetscape. The unusual carved finial, the decorative polychrome surrounds to the window openings, the rose window and the elaborate porch all serve to enliven the structure and display the architectural and decorative breadth of the designers and builders.
Internally the accommodation comprises of a hall, two offices, a large open plan room with original vaulted timber ceiling and mezzanine. The property is also listed as a protected structure on the register with Galway County Council.
Columban Hall is a building rich in history with so much potential for a new era in its lifespan.
