Construction began on the building of 3,028 new homes in July – an increase of 169% on the same month last year when there were 1,125 commencements recorded.
That’s according to new figures from the Department of Housing which found that building work had begun on some 18,974 new homes since the start of the year.
This was also up 152% from the 7,539 homes commenced in the first seven months of last year.
This is the second highest number of new home commencements in the period since recording began in 2014.
Of the new commencements last month, over half (1,612) are houses being built as part of multi-unit developments, 1,004 are apartments, with the remaining 412 made up of one-off houses. Just over a quarter of July's commencements were in Dublin.
Commenting on the figures, Housing Minister James Browne said: "The positive momentum observed in the first seven months of this year builds on strong figures for 2024 and 2025 combined, when a total of 85,723 new homes were commenced - an increase of 43% compared with the combined total for the previous two-year period (2022 and 2023).
"I have set ambitious targets in the Housing Action Plan and we need to keep our shoulder firmly to the wheel. I want more homes delivered and thousands of people are counting on that progress. I'm under no illusion about it."
