Record high number of new homes commenced in first two months of 2024

A record high of 7,056 new homes commenced in the first two months of 2024, according to the latest Commencement Notices from the Government.

The figure is up 72% on the first two months of 2023 with the number of commencements in February up 85% year-on-year from 1,997 last year to 3,699 this year.

This marks the highest number of commencements for February since records began in 2015.

The rolling 12 month commencements figure for new homes is now above 35,750.

A statement from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage said: “These figures indicate that supply, which is key to addressing our housing needs continues to increase and that a robust stock of new housing is in the pipeline.”
