Minister for Housing Simon Coveney is set to announce plans to fast-track the construction of 30,000 new homes today.
He said changes to the planning system will hopefully allow at least 25,000 homes to be built a year. It’s understood that developers at today’s launch have committed to building houses on their respective sites, selling from €250,000.
Pillar three of the 'Rebuilding Ireland' action plan - published last July - sets targets to double the annual level of residential construction to 25,000 homes and deliver 47,000 units of social housing by 2021.
"We must speed up the processes that lead to housing delivery and we must make it more efficient to deliver the homes that people need and where they need them," he said ahead of the launch.
"Today is a very good start by identifying the sites with the greatest potential for development and both I and the Government now want to see developers getting on with building the homes that people need."
Coveney will be joined by Minister for State Damien English, as well as by developers who have committed to start construction on land banks that have been lying vacant.
In September, it was reported that the number on Dublin City Council's housing list has increased by 954 applicants since January 2016.
