As many as 52% of those liable for the household charge have yet to register for it, according to new calculations from NUI Maynooth’s Rob Kitchin.
Mr Kitchin, the director of the National Institute of Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) has for some time rejected the government’s claims that 1.6 million households were liable for the €100 charge – insisting this is “patently not the case.”
Writing in his blog, Ireland After NAMA, says that of the 1,994,845 households in the State, 1,755,687 of those are liable to pay the household tax.
He gathered this figure by subtracting a number of the household types not liable to pay such as those renting social or voluntary housing, those in unfinished estates and those receiving mortgage interest relief. He also excluded the 18,636 vacant or unsold units.
Mr Kitchin found that 763,249 property owners had yet to register for the charge as of June 1st.
